Christmas Festivities 2016 – London Pubs, Clubs and Restaurants now is the time to make sure all your Staff knows the premise Fire Safety Emergency Plan!!

It’s the time to celebrate and enjoy the festivities and to make sure that everyone has a fun packed time - all Responsible Persons need to double check their Fire Safety!

If you are having candles, check that they are positioned safely away from any combustible materials such as curtains or cushions. They will be easily knocked over when people are dancing and having fun – it may be best to replace them with LED lights.

Double check the occupancy numbers for your premise and make sure that you don’t squeeze more people in than you are licensed for!

Most importantly – take a little time out to make sure your Staff know the Fire Emergency Plan – they will need to know how to calmly react and quickly in a time of Fire or any other emergency.  You may have carry out a specific Fire Safety Assessment if you have candles.

Make sure your Staff knows how to use the Fire protection equipment such as Fire Blankets and Extinguishers and of course you must double check that all the equipment is up to date!

Once all your Fire Safety checks have been completed – open the doors and enjoy the Festivities!!!

Three London Shop Fires in November

Three London Shop Fires in November – All Shops should have a Fire Safety Management Plan are you actioning on yours?

London Fire Brigade has reported 3 Shop Fires in the first part of November.

A Shoe Repair Shop in Teddington was damaged by Fire and Five people were evacuated from adjacent flats as a precaution. The cause of Fire is believed to have started in a machine used to fix shoe soles.

A Fire in a shop in St John’s Wood resulted in the ground floor being damaged.

And Finally a Shop in Islington had its ground floor gutted by a blaze. Part of the First floor and some of the external fascia was also damaged by the Fire. This Fire is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette!

London Fire Risk Assessments advice to Shop Owners:

All London Shop’s should have a current Fire Safety Risk Assessment for their premise. Part of the Fire Safety Risk Assessment is a Fire Safety Management Plan – Significant Findings. This document identifies all the Fire Safety deficiencies within the premise and outlines the Actions that are required to rectify them. For more information click here.

As part of the Fire Risk Assessment process a Fire Safety Inspection should be carried out at your London based Shop this should be conducted by a competent Fire Risk Assessor.

LFRA TIP! - always check the Assessors accreditations to ensure you are getting a qualified Assessor.

Checking that Shop machinery has been maintained and tested regularly, to meet the British Standards, is part of the Fire Safety Inspection process. Also it will be noted if a ‘No Smoking’ Sign is displayed at the premise – just these two examples may have helped prevent the Fires in the above mentioned premises!

Bin Store Blaze in London Residential Block of Flats – Fire Brigade praised by Resident for their quick response!

London Fire Brigade reported on their incident page that around 10 bins and a motorcycle in the storage area of a Residential Block of Flats in Hounslow, London were destroyed by Fire. A Resident praised the Fire Brigade for getting to the Fire so quickly and saving their homes. Residents were very shaken but Firefighters got to the scene in less than 2 minuets!! Bin stores should be included in the Fire Risk Assessment for a Residential Block of Flats as this is part of the communal area. Residents should double check that their Bin stores have been inspected by a qualified Fire Risk Assessor and included in the premise Fire Safety Risk Assessment.

Every London Purpose Built Block of Flats or any Houses converted into Flats must have a Fire Safety Risk Assessment for the communal areas. This is a requirement of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

London Fire Risk Assessments offer a Fire Protection Safety Service and can provide clients with a suitable and sufficient Fire Safety Risk Assessment for the communal area of their Flats. A Fire Safety Policy and a Fire Safety Emergency Plan is part of the Fire Risk Assessment documentation and it is important that Residents are made aware Emergency Plan so that they know what to do in a time of emergency.
